His ophthalmology training was completed through the Sydney Eye Hospital network, one of the largest ophthalmic training programs in Australia. Following this, he spent a further year as Senior Ophthalmology Registrar at Royal North Shore Hospital.

To develop his retinal subspecialty skills, Dr Plant completed fellowships in Medical Retina, Uveitis, and Vitreoretinal Surgery at Bristol Eye Hospital and the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospitals in the United Kingdom. During his time in the UK, he was a sub-investigator on multiple clinical studies researching new treatments for retinal diseases, including therapies for retinal vein occlusion and age-related macular degeneration.
