The procedures performed at Pure Sight are functionally indicated, meaning they aim to restore normal eyelid function and protect the health of the eye.
Procedures
Ptosis repair
Ptosis repair is performed to lift a drooping upper eyelid and restore an adequate visual field. The most common approach involves tightening or reinserting the levator muscle, which is the primary muscle responsible for elevating the upper lid. The procedure is typically performed under local anaesthesia as a day case. The goal is to achieve a natural, symmetrical lid position that no longer obstructs vision.
Ectropion repair
Surgery for ectropion repositions the outward-turning lower lid back to its normal position against the eye. The most common technique involves tightening the horizontal lid tissue to correct laxity. Restoring the normal lid position protects the ocular surface and resolves the chronic irritation and tearing associated with the condition.
Entropion repair
Entropion surgery corrects the inward-turning eyelid to prevent the lashes from continuing to rub on the cornea. Several techniques are available depending on the underlying cause. Once corrected, the irritation resolves and corneal damage is prevented from progressing.
Upper lid blepharoplasty
Upper lid blepharoplasty removes excess skin and, where necessary, herniated fat from the upper eyelids. When the excess skin is causing a clinically significant visual field obstruction, the procedure is considered functional rather than purely cosmetic. Visual field testing is typically performed prior to surgery to document the degree of obstruction.
Chalazion drainage
A persistent chalazion that has not resolved with conservative management can be drained through a minor procedure performed under local anaesthesia. A small incision is made on the inner surface of the eyelid and the contents of the blocked gland are expressed. This is a quick, well-tolerated procedure.
What to Expect
Eyelid procedures at Pure Sight are performed under local anaesthesia, typically as day cases. Recovery time depends on the specific procedure but most patients can return to normal activities within a few days to two weeks. Bruising and swelling are expected in the early post-operative period and gradually settle. Dr Teong will provide specific aftercare instructions tailored to your procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is eyelid surgery painful?
Local anaesthesia is used for all eyelid procedures, so the surgery itself is not painful. Mild discomfort, bruising, and swelling are normal in the days following surgery and are managed with simple pain relief and cold compresses.
Will there be visible scarring?
Incisions are placed in the natural creases of the eyelid where they are well concealed. Scarring is generally minimal and fades over several months.
Is blepharoplasty covered by Medicare?
Upper lid blepharoplasty may attract a Medicare rebate when there is documented functional visual field obstruction caused by excess eyelid skin. The team at Pure SIght Eye Surgeons will advise on eligibility and out-of-pocket costs during your consultation.
How long does recovery take?
Most patients experience bruising and swelling for one to two weeks. Sutures are typically removed within a week. Full healing and final results develop over several months as the tissues settle.
